In front of the largest crowd of the season, the Knights took care of business in three sets as they defeated Cuyamaca (26-24, 25-14, 25-21) to earn their second consecutive sweep. Allison Wygal recorded her second straight double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs.
San Diego City held a Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser before and during Wednesday's match and raised $435 for cancer research. There were over 250 people in attendance and the Knights did not disappoint the big home crowd.
In the opening set, the Knights had an 18-13 lead, but Cuyamaca rallied with an 8-1 run to grab a 21-19 lead. City, however, came back to tie it at 24-24 and then finished the set off with a Tayen Orr kill and a Cuyamaca error to win, 26-24.
Orr led the Knights offensively with a season-high 14 kills.
San Diego City jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the second set and never looked back as they went on to secure a 25-14 victory to go up 2-0.
It looked as though Cuyamaca was on its way to extending the match to a fourth set after going ahead 13-8 and later, 18-15, but the Knights fought back and tied it up at 19-19. With the set tied once again at 21-21, the Knights rolled off four straight points on two Cuyamaca errors, an Aliyah Lucas block, and a Wygal kill to finish off the match.
Cassie Stevens led all players with 17 digs. Cordelia Gipson tallied 21 assists and Lauren Eastman added another 13 assists.
The Knights have two more home matches coming up on Friday vs. Palomar at 5 p.m. and against Mesa on Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. They will then close out the season with road matches at Southwestern (11/1), at Miramar (11/6), and at Grossmont (11/13).
