The Knights opened the PCAC season at home on Tuesday against Imperial Valley and earned a 3-2 victory with sophomore Hannah Hawk scoring a brace, including the game-winner in the 69th minute. Jenica Stell scored City's other goal as the Knights improved to 1-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Team captain Hawk got the Knights on the board very early with a goal in the third minute when she got the ball after a poor clearance just outside the box and dribbled in for an easy score.
A minute and a half later, Stell received a ball from Mia Martinez on the right side and put in her first goal of the season to give the Knights a quick 2-0 lead.
Imperial Valley answered with a goal from Mayola Valencia in the 18th minute to get back into it and then tied it in the 57th minute with a goal from Emily Lopez.
Hawk, however, found the back of the net with a header in the 69th minute off a pass from Monika Negrete in what turned out to be the game-winning goal that gave the Knights their first win of the season. Hawk now leads the Knights with three goals on the season.
City will be on the road on Friday at Compton for a 4 p.m. game in what will be the second meeting of the season. The Knights and Compton played a 0-0 draw on September 8.
The Knights will then resume PCAC play at Mesa on September 19.
