It appeared as though Friday's home game against Southwestern was headed to a scoreless draw, but Fatima Valle changed that outcome when she knocked in a loose ball in the 81st minute to give the Knights a 1-0 victory, their sixth in a row, and fifth consecutive shutout.
It appeared as though Friday's home game against Southwestern was headed to a scoreless draw, but Fatima Valle changed that outcome when she knocked in a loose ball in the 81st minute to give the Knights a 1-0 victory, their sixth in a row, and fifth consecutive shutout.
The Knights and Southwestern were tied for second place in the PCAC standings coming in to Friday's game, but the Knights' win earned them sole possession of second. City is now 7-1 overall and 6-1 in conference.
Play was even throughout, with neither team being able to control possession for very long. City was tough and physical on defense as usual, and that earned them 11 fouls to the Jaguars five, but none deserved bookings.
Shots were just about even with the Knights taking 12 (five on target) and Southwestern attempting 10 (six on target).
The only statistic that was heavily in favor of the Knights was corner kicks. City earned a total of six while Southwestern did not take any, and in the 80th minute, the Knights won a corner kick that would lead to the breakthrough goal.
Alexia Moreno took the kick and sent it into the middle of the 18-yard box where Syndey Sanchez leaped and headed the ball towards the net. It took a bounce in front of Southwestern's goalkeeper Mireyli Ramirez, but she coudn't secure it and Valle stepped in to put in the loose ball and give the Knights a much-needed goal.
The Knights' defense held firm the rest of the way as they went on to record their fifth straight shutout win. City has outscored their last five opponents, 19-0.
Next up for the Knights will be a road game at Mesa (7-2-1, 6-0-1 PCAC) with first place on the line on Tuesday, October 19. It will be the second meeting of the season with Mesa defeating the Knights, 3-1, on September 17, City's last loss.
