Melissa Valadez broke a scoreless tie just before halftime and the Knights added two more in the second half to earn a 3-0 home victory over Mt. San Jacinto on Tuesday.
It was City's second consecutive win after defeating Palomar, 3-2, last Friday, and the Knights' first shutout of the season.
Mount San Jacinto controlled the ball for most of the first half, but the Knights capitalized on one of their few chances near halftime. Esther Idarza sent in a cross towards the middle of the box, and after a couple bounces, found its way to Valadez near the far post and she knocked the ball in for her fifth goal of the season in the 43rd minute.
In the 55th minute, Valadez and Idarza teamed up for another goal. This time, Valadez sent in a long ball from the middle of the field that fell to Idarza in stride along the left side. Idarza then beat the Eagles' keeper for her second goal of the season.
The Knights struck again less than four minutes later for a third goal that came off a set piece. After earning their second corner kick of the game, Kenya Zamora sent in a pass towards the far post which landed in front of Breia Stewart, who easily put it in. It was her second goal of the year and it gave the Knights a 3-0 lead that they would hold on to.
Goalkeeper Andrea Kumano earned her first shutout win with 5 saves.
The Knights improved to 3-8-2 overall and will play at College of the Desert on Friday at 3 p.m.
