Four more recruits have joined San Diego City's growing softball roster that included Katelyn Cordero, Desirae Matos, Cassidy Munoz, and Elena Avina. These four student-athletes provided short introductions in their own words...
Katelyn Cordero:
Hello! I'm Katelyn Cordero and my softball career began in high school along with dance and ROTC, but softball was my happy place all four years! I was always excited for season to start and sad when it was coming to an end. My whole family are huge baseball fans and most of us play. My Dad was in the all-stars league when he was my age and he is where my love for the game started. Sadly, my dad passed when I was in elementary school so I feel super lucky to be able to continue playing this amazing sport so he can watch me from the best seat!
Desirae Matos:
My name is Desirae Matos and I've been playing softball since i was eight years old. I started at a league in National City then moved to a different and more competitive team in Imperial Beach. I played at Chula Vista High School for the varsity team since my sophomore year. When the pandemic hit, it cut off my senior season. I knew that I wanted to play again and never lost passion for the game. Talking to Coach Kali and AJ about the next step in my career really excited me. I can't wait to start working hard and playing for City.
Cassidy Munoz:
I'm a right-handed pitcher and I've been playing since I was about eight years old. I'm looking to major in biology to transfer into environmental science. I love hiking, reading, and being outdoors!
Elena Avina:
My first time playing softball was my freshman year of high school. My first year playing, we won all our games in league which helped me to love this sport. My sophomore year, I tried out for varsity and made the team. Our season was cut short because of Covid and I was unable to practice or play for the rest of the year. As a junior, I practiced volleyball and did off-season softball training under the restrictions of Covid. When Covid restrictions were more lenient, I was able to play a modified volleyball season. My first game of the season was on my birthday and during a jump serve I completely tore my ACL, tore my meniscus, and fractured my left knee due to a bad landing. This injury stopped me from playing softball my junior year and almost stopped me from playing softball my senior year. However, I pushed through my recovery process and trained hard to play this season and I made it happen.
