The Knights, who clinched the outright Inland Empire Athletic Conference championship with an 8-1 win over Mt. San Jacinto on Tuesday, defeated Mt. San Antonio 8-1 on Wednesday to complete an undefeated 10-0 conference season. It's the second championship under head coach Brandon Lupian and the 12th in the program's history.
The previous conference title came in 2017 when the Knights went 12-0 to win the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. Before that, the Knights hadn't won a championship since 1977.
San Diego City, currently ranked No. 6 in Southern California, finished the regular season with a 13-3 overall record, which adds up to the best winning percentage (.813) since Lupian took the helm in 2006.
It's an accomplishment that doesn't happen every season and when you've been so close the last number of years, finally getting to the top and finishing with an undefeated conference record is really special," said Lupian. "I told the guys there's not a lot of perfect things in this world, however, one thing that nobody could ever take away from you is a perfect conference record.
"Regardless of the talent of the other schools, you still gotta go put in the work and the guys worked and I'm grateful and very appreciative of them all season long."
The Knights will now wait to find out their playoff seeding, which will be announced by the 3C2A on Sunday. Their first playoff match will take place on April 8 with time and location also to be announced on Sunday.
Before the dual team playoffs, the Knights will have a week to prepare for the IEAC singles and doubles championships, which will take place at Mt. San Antonio College on April 3, 4, and 5.
