FOUR KNIGHTS SET TO PLAY IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY
The San Diego City College men's tennis team had three of its singles players and one doubles team qualify for the CCCAA state championships beginning on Thursday, April 21 in Ojai, Calif.
The San Diego City College men's tennis team had three of its singles players and one doubles team qualify for the CCCAA state championships beginning on Thursday, April 21 in Ojai, Calif.
The Knights' No. 1 on the ladder, Daniel Villa Rosas, will go into the championship tournament having won three matches in a row, including a victory in the round of 16 at the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference tournament. Villa Rosas' 12-7 singles record is the best on the team.
Dale Gutierrez, City's No. 3 on the ladder, also qualified for the championship with an 8-7 record in 2016. He had a season-high 4-match win streak in February.
Patrick Meier, who also had a 4-match win streak in February, spent most of the season as the Knights' No. 4, finished with a 7-6 record at that position, and will also play in the state singles championship.
The Knights' No. 1 doubles team of Gutierrez and Logan Rinder will also compete in Ojai. They went 8-5 in 2016 and had a season-high 4-match win streak in the middle of the season.
All four of these student-athletes helped the Knights to their best season since 2009. City finished with a 10-10 overall record and a 6-4 PCAC record which was good for third place in the conference.
