Knights Move Into 2nd With 3rd Straight Victory
The Knights (6-5-4, 4-2-1 PCAC) won their third straight on Friday as they edged out MiraCosta, 2-1, to move up into a second place tie with the Spartans with only five games remaining in the PCAC season. Marko Alonzo's second-half goal was his first of the season and ended up being the game-winner.
In the second half, San Diego City extended their lead in the 51st minute when Marko Alonso hit the back of the net with a scorcher from 30 yards out off another assist from Exantus, making it 2-0. Exantus not only leads the team in goals with nine, but also has the most assists with six.
The intensity of the game increased as San Diego City tried to hold on to its lead. There were five yellow cards given out, including one for Exantus and Christopher Miramontes within a few minutes of each other.
MiraCosta kept searching for a goal and the Spartans finally got one back in the 77th minute when Alonso Torres Rojas scored, cutting the City's lead to 2-1. Despite their best efforts, including several shots in the final minutes, MiraCosta couldn't find an equalizer, with Diego Garcia making key saves.
Garcia ended up stopping seven shots as he and his defense held on for the massive win to keep the Knights in contention for the league title.
The Knights are tied with MiraCosta with a 4-2-1 PCAC record, just one game behind Cuyamaca (5-1-1).
San Diego City will play its final two home games against Palomar on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and against Imperial Valley on Friday at 3 p.m. They will then wrap up the conference season with three straight road games at Cuyamaca (Oct. 29), at Southwestern (Nov. 5), and at Mesa (Nov. 8).
