San Diego City started strong, applying early pressure with a header from Christopher Miramontes in the 13th minute, but Canyons' goalkeeper Velasquez was up to the task. City forward Jamesley Exantus had a shot blocked in the 19th minute and Johnson Nguyen's shot was saved in the 25th minute.
The game was very physical with a combined 30 fouls, 18 of which were committed in the second half. Despite the interrupted play, the Knights were able to get six shots on frame in the second half.
City's best chance came in the 88th minute when it was awarded a penalty kick after a Canyons foul in the box. Samuel Ruiz stepped up to take the kick, but Canyons' keeper Velasquez stopped Ruiz' grounder to keep the game at 0-0.
In the closing minutes, Canyons launched a barrage of attacks, with Alejandro Zalamea and Cristopher Chavez both forcing Juarez into action. However, Juarez held firm, making a series of crucial saves in stoppage time to secure the draw for San Diego City.
The Knights will be home again for two games next week. They will host College of the Desert on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 3 p.m. and Orange Coast on Friday, Sept. 6 at 3 p.m.
