Isaac Velazquez continuted his hot scoring streak with two goals on Friday and Brett Woodworth added the game-winner in the 82nd minute to give the Knights a 3-2 home win over Imperial Valley, City's third win in the last four games.
The Knights have been involved in several seesaw battles this season and Friday's game was no different as they came from behind to take the lead and then saw that lead disappear, but they found a much-needed winner in the waning moments to improve to 1-1 in the PCAC after losing the conference opener to Palomar, 3-2, in the final minute.
Imperial Valley grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute and the game stayed that way until Isaac Velazquez scored the equalizer in the 55th minute off a pass from Woodworth.
Then, after a foul in the 18-yard box, Velazquez converted a penalty kick to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. It was his 12th goal of the season, which is tied for the most in the state. He has scored in four straight games and in five of the last six.
Imperial Valley's Roger Cabrera answered with his second goal of the day in the 74th minute to tie it back up. The Knights, however, still had more in the tank and Woodworth put his team back on top for good with the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute, his eighth of the year. He is tied for the fifth most goals in the state and is tied for third in the state in assists with six.
City goalkeeper Sebastian Guillen had four saves on the day to bring his total to 74, which is second in the state.
The Knights play at Cuyamaca on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. and will be back home on Friday, Oct. 10 against Southwestern.
