The Knights earned a crucial 2-1 home win over MiraCosta on Tuesday to move into second place in the PCAC and stay in contention for the conference title.
Erwin Hampton and Brandon Martinez scored the goals in the first half as the Knights improved to 6-2-1 in the PCAC and 6-9-1 overall.
City did not waste much time in getting on the board as Hampton received a ball just past midfield and dribbled into the middle of the box and shot it past MiraCosta's goalkeeper for the early 1-0 lead.
Jordy Robolledo and Antonio Martin each tried to increase City's lead, but their shots were saved by Spartans' keeper Seth Ketterer. In the 36th minute, however, Martinez headed in a free kick from Christian Velasquez to give the Knights their second goal.
MiraCosta was much more aggressive in the second half as they outshot the Knights 11-4, eight of which were saved by City goalkeeper Sebastian Guillen.
MiraCosta finally got one past Guillen in the 65th minute on a goal from Cole Simes. The Spartans kept the pressure on the Knights' defense until the final whistle and even had a pair of shots stopped by Guillen in the final minute, but the score remained in favor of the Knights.
City is now only one game behind Cuyamaca for first place with three left to play. The Knights have a home game vs. Palomar on Friday at 3 p.m. They will then travel to Imperial Valley on November 12 and wrap up the conference season with a home game against Cuyamaca on November 15.
