The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has named San Diego City's Marco Anzures as its Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year after he guided the Knights to their best season in 32 years.
"I could not be more proud of Marco and the team," said Acting Dean/Athletic Director Aaron Detty. "Marco's leadership goes far beyond the sport. He is a great leader and mentor to our student-athletes."
Under Anzures, the Knights kept improving individually and as a team with most runners setting new personal bests at every race. That hard work paid off when the Knights placed second at the PCAC championship on October 22, their best finish at that meet since 1989.
Two weeks later, all six runners for the Knights ran their best race of the season to earn 13th place at the Southern California regional championship and a spot at the state championship meet for the first time since 1989.
The Knights, who ended up in 16th at the state championship, were the only team from the PCAC to place.
"I am very honored to be recognized with this award by my peers," said Coach Anzures. "This has been a special year for our program and the recognition is more confirmation that we are a top team in our area. I would be remiss to not also recognize the assistant coaches for their contributions, and of course to our student-athletes who executed our team goals throughout the season."
