Knights Earn a Split in Season Opening Doubleheader

San Diego City's women's volleyball team opened the season with a doubleheader on Friday, losing to Santa Ana in three sets, but then defeating host Santiago Canyon, 3-1, to earn a split on the day. 

In the first match of the season, the Knights faced a Santa Ana team that already had three wins under its belt. City hung with the Dons in the opening set, but fell 25-18. The Knights then struggled in the next two sets, losing 25-8 and 25-10, as Santa Ana went on to get the sweep.

The Knights then dropped the opening set to Santiago Canyon, 25-17, but responded well by edging out a 25-23 win in the second set to even the match. 

City squeezed out a 28-26 victory in the third set and then hung on for a 25-22 win in the fourth set to win the match, 3-1, over Santiago Canyon. 

Sophomore Ashley Davies led the way with 13 kills and 16 digs against Canyon. Freshman Alexis Mines added eight kills along with 13 digs, and sophomore Jadian Dilg contributed six kills and three digs. 

Sophomore Riley Hearn played well defensively with 10 digs.

The Knights are back on the road on September 7 at Rio Hondo at 5 p.m. They will also travel to Chaffey for another doubleheader on September 9.
