The Knights had a slow start in Friday's season opener vs. Merritt as they fell behind by 18 in the first half, but cut that deficit to nine by halftime and then went on an 11-2 run in the third quarter to get within 42-38. Unfortunately, that's as close as the Knights got with Merritt pulling away in the fourth quarter.
Gorgees scored 24 points to go with five rebounds and three steals, while Cusha Landry added 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
The Knights had a much better start to Saturday's game against Barstow as they grabbed an early 13-4 lead and never looked back. City had an 11-point lead after the first quarter and then outscored Barstow, 35-13, in the second quarter to blow the game open. Gorgees led the Knights offensively with 21 points and had a strong game defensively with five steals.
Four other Knights scored in double figures, including Sarah Henry (13 points, nine rebounds), Larissa Chaney (13 points, seven rebounds), Landry (13 points, six rebounds), and Caitlyn McCoy (11 points, six assists, five rebounds).
Gorgees (17 points, three rebounds), Kaniya Lloyd (13 points, 11 rebounds), and McCoy (10 points, three assists) led the Knights offensively against Rio Hondo on Sunday, but it wasn't enough as the Roadrunners pulled away in the second half.
City doesn't play again until the Knights Inivtational at Harry West Gym, which begins on Thursday, Nov. 17. The Knights will open the 3-day invitational against Santa Ana at 5 p.m. They will then play Reedley at 5 p.m. on Nov. 18 and Cuyamaca at 3 p.m. on Nov. 19
