After spending the 2021-22 season as an assistant coach with the University of San Diego men's basketball team, Mitch Charlens has returned as head coach of the men's basketball team effective immediately.
"There's no place like home," Charlens said about rejoining the Knights.
And "home" has been a place full of success and accolades. Since he first started at San Diego City in 2004-05, Mitch has led the Knights to a state championship (2017), seven PCAC titles, 325 total wins, and seven PCAC Coach of the Year awards in 16 seasons.
Under Charlens, the Knights have reached the 30-win mark twice in 2016-17 and 2017-2018 and advanced to the state championship game in both of those seasons. His Knights have also won at least 20 games seven times.
During Charlens' year at USD, interim head coach Andy Ground kept the Knights playing at a high-level. He led the team to a PCAC championship after going 16-0 and was subsequently named PCAC Coach of the Year. The 2021-22 Knights finished 26-4 overall and made it to a Southern California regional final.
With a recharged Charlens back at the helm, the Knights are poised to stay as one of the top programs in the state.
