"I am so proud of my team for their commitment and hard work," said head coach Jami Jones. "They displayed character, resilience, and grit meeting challenges throughout the season. They all earned the honor of being the first SDCC women's tennis team in 24 years to be PCAC champs.
Jones' Knights have been very competitive in conference play for several years and came up just a little short of a title in 2017 when they finished only one match behind. They also earned second in 2018 and 2023, but they finally broke through this season.
"When I started coaching the team at City 12 years ago, my goal was to build a solid tennis program," said Jones. "Winning the conference title is the realization of that goal. I am beyond thrilled."
The Knights secured the outright title by taking two-of-three doubles matches and 5-of-6 singles matches against Grossmont on Tuesday.
City's No. 1 doubles pair, Sinaia Haskal and Anya Villanueva, defeated GCC's Sydney McClain/Jessica Stuman, 8-3, while the No. 2 team, Jessica Hoffpauir and Lucia Farmer, got an 8-2 win over Grossmont's Lucille Braunschweig/Debbie Humphrey.
Haskal (No. 1), Farmer (No. 2), Hoffpauir (No. 3), Villanueva (No. 4), and Arleen Torres (No. 6) all won their singles matches in straight sets to clinch the match.
In addition to winning the conference title, the Knights have also qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2018. The first round is scheduled for April 9 with time and opponent to be announced.
