For the first time in team history, the San Diego City College women's basketball team completed the PCAC South season with an undefeated 8-0 record after dispatching Southwestern, 76-67, on Valentine's Day.
The Knights, who struggled to a 5-12 non-conference record, turned their season around dramatically by winning all eight PCAC South games to improve to 13-12 overall.
They had clinched the outright conference title, their second straight, with a win at Grossmont last Friday, but the Knights came into Wednesday's game looking to make Sophomore Night even more special with a win that would make the 2018 team the only to go undefeated in conference.
It didn't start out as well as they hoped with Southwestern taking a 38-30 lead late in the second quarter, but the Knights responded with the final four points of the first half and the first eight points of the third quarter, a 12-0 run, to take their first lead of the game.
It remained close throughout and the game was tied at 61-61 with 5:48 left in the fourth quarter. Then, a pair of successful free throws from Angeleah Johnson, a 3 by E'maniee Powell, a layup by Powell, and another 3 by Powell put the Knights ahead for good, 71-61 with 4:10 left.
Powell scored 10 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter. She also added five rebounds and three steals. Johnson recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Breeana Gafare scored nine points off the bench, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out 10 assists.
The Knights' 8-game win streak is the longest in team history.
They have one more home game left, a non-conference affair against Mt. San Jacinto on Friday at 5 p.m.
